Dermaplaning vs Microdermabrasion in Hawaii: Which Fits Your Skin?

Dermaplaning uses a fine blade to lift dead skin and soft peach fuzz. Microdermabrasion uses a gentle tool to buff away the top layer of dull skin. Both are quick, light treatments, and in Hawaii, sun timing matters for each one.

You are getting ready for a sunset party at the beach. Your makeup sits on top of your skin instead of melting in. Your face looks a little dull, even after a good night of sleep.

Book my visit or call (808) 263-3233 to ask which one fits you.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a light treatment for the surface of your face. A trained provider holds a small, sterile blade at an angle. They glide it over your skin in short, gentle strokes.

The blade lifts dead skin cells from the top layer. It also removes the soft, fine hair often called peach fuzz.

Most patients say it feels like a light scrape, not pain. Many people go back to their day right after.

Quick facts

  • What it does: lifts dead skin and fine facial hair

  • How it feels: a soft scraping feeling

  • Downtime: usually little to none

  • Who it often suits: dull skin, makeup that looks cakey, fine facial hair

What is microdermabrasion?

Face towel, dropper bottle, and papaya on a hala placemat in a Hawaii home.

Microdermabrasion also works on the top layer of skin. It uses a tool with a rough tip or tiny crystals, not a blade. Gentle suction pulls away the loosened cells.

It can help skin look smoother and more even. Some people use it for dull skin or rough texture.

Most patients feel a light, sandpaper-like pull. Skin may look pink for a few hours.

Quick facts

  • What it does: buffs and lifts dead skin cells

  • How it feels: a light pulling or sanding feeling

  • Downtime: often mild pinkness for a short time

  • Who it often suits: rough texture, dullness, uneven tone

How are the two different?

Both treatments clear away dead skin, but they do it in different ways.

  • Tool: dermaplaning uses a blade, while microdermabrasion uses a buffing tip

  • Peach fuzz: dermaplaning removes it, while microdermabrasion does not

  • Feel: dermaplaning feels smooth, while microdermabrasion feels like light sanding

  • Best match: peach fuzz points to dermaplaning, rough texture to microdermabrasion

Neither one goes deep. They are light surface treatments, not resurfacing lasers.

Your provider will tell you what fits your skin.

Why does Hawaii change the plan?

Life here happens outside. That changes how you prep and how you heal.

Hawaii UV is strong all year. It eases a little from about October to February. That makes fall a comfortable time to try a light treatment.

Fresh skin is more open to the sun for a few days. Plan your visit away from a long beach day or a reef dive.

Trade winds can leave skin feeling tight and dry. Kona wind days bring humid, sticky air. Both can change how your skin feels after a visit.

Hawaii is also home to every skin tone. Deeper skin tones can darken after irritation. A gentle plan and good sun care help lower that chance.

How do you care for your skin after?

Clear serum droplets beside a puakenikeni flower on marble in Hawaii.

Your provider will give you exact steps. These basics are common:

  • Wash with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser

  • Skip scrubs and strong acids for a few days

  • Wear a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide every morning

  • Wear a wide-brim hat when you head outdoors

A light hydrating serum helps fresh skin feel comfortable. Radiant Hydration Serum is fragrance-free and has seven forms of hyaluronic acid. It also layers well under makeup.

It hydrates fresh skin and has a ceramide complex. For extra comfort at night, Luminous Repair Cream supports the skin barrier.

What not to do

  • Do not shave or scrape your face at home before a visit

  • Do not book right before a long day at the beach

  • Do not pick at flaky or dry spots after

  • Do not treat skin with an acne flare or open sore

Home tools can nick the skin or spread bacteria. Clouds over the Ko'olau still let UV through. Wear sunscreen on gray days too.

Who should skip it for now?

Some skin needs a different plan first. Talk with your provider before booking if you have:

  • An active acne flare with deep, sore bumps

  • A cold sore or open sore on your face

  • A recent sunburn

  • Rosacea that flares easily

  • A recent laser, peel, or new prescription cream

When to see a provider

Start with a consult, so a provider can look at your skin first.

  • A fever

  • Eye pain or changes in your vision

Telehealth is available for neighbor island patients, and Quest and Medicaid are accepted for telehealth. Dermaplaning and microdermabrasion happen in person at our clinic.

Common questions

Will my hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

No, that is a common myth. Fine facial hair grows back the same soft texture it had before.

Does either one hurt?

Most patients feel little discomfort. Dermaplaning feels like a soft scrape, and microdermabrasion feels like light sanding.

How often can I get one?

Many people return every few weeks. Your provider will suggest a timing that suits your skin and your plans.

Can I wear makeup after?

Many people can wear makeup later that day or the next day. Ask your provider what is best for your skin.

Which one is better before an event?

Many people like dermaplaning before an event because makeup goes on smoothly. Book it several days ahead, not the morning of.
